Bugle Boy Industries was founded in 1977 by Dr. William Mow. Today it is
one of the largest privately-held apparel companies in the country, selling
its products in more than 7,000 better department store doors and family and
specialty retailers, as well as in its own retail factory outlet stores.
Behind Bugle Boy's success is a simple philosophy: offer real value and
quality to the consumer while maximizing retail profits. It's a philosophy
that requires Bugle Boy to provide stylish and comfortable clothing at a
moderate price. In a crowded marketplace, it also requires Bugle Boy to create
an extremely savvy marketing strategy and to maintain bulletproof
manufacturing and distribution operation systems.
A sexy model in a hot car mouthing the question "Excuse me, are
those Bugle Boy jeans you're wearing?" was the start of Bugle Boy's
first, widely copied, and now legendary television advertising campaign. These
days, Bugle Boy has continued to lead the industry with ideas such as the
"family oriented" campaigns, which have often been imitated by other
clothing companies.
The less glamorous side of the coin, manufacturing and distribution, is as
important as marketing. As one might expect from a company whose founder has a
background in computer engineering, the manufacturing and distribution systems
set in place at Bugle Boy Industries are state-of-the-art. In addition to
domestic production, Bugle Boy products are currently manufactured in more
than 40 foreign countries. All production, whether domestic or imported, is
shipped from Bugle Boy's four distribution facilities located in Southern
California. The distribution centers are fully automated, using conveyors, bar
coding, and laser scanners, which integrate into Bugle Boy's mainframe
computer, an IBM advanced series AS/400. This setup allows for a fully
integrated communication system between Bugle Boy and its clients via
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and its overseas production offices.
Essentially, this infrastructure allows for a more expedient transfer of
up-to-date knowledge between all parties. And saved time is saved money!
